Rib

Source.

While reading Genesis 1 last week, I thought to myself, why did God take woman from man’s ribs? Have you ever thought about that? God could have taken one of Adam’s kidneys to make Eve – he had one to spare. Or, God could’ve removed a piece of Adam’s liver to fashion Eve – the organ would’ve regenerated itself. But, God chose a rib, and God is the most purposeful being there is. So, let’s check out the significance of the ribs to discover God’s design for woman (in relation to man).

The rib cage has three important functions: protection, support, and respiration.

Protection: Just as the heart rests securely in the rib cage, woman was designed to be entrusted with man’s heart to protect it. Men aren’t quick to expose their “insides,” so, as a woman, whenever you’ve been granted access to a man’s heart, you cover it. Women are not to leave a man’s “vital organs” exposed to harm by revealing his secrets. A prime example of this is the story of Samson and Delilah (Judges 16)…Love covers. Love protects.

Support: In addition to protecting the heart, the rib cage provides support for the core muscles. Although God equipped men with strength, their “muscles” need support. And, a woman is not only meant to support a man, but support him at his “core.” The support (or lack thereof) a husband receives from his wife will affect all the other areas of his life…if the “core” is strong, the rest of the body will be also.

Respiration: Although woman is meant to be close to man to protect and support him, she wasn’t created to smother or “suffocate” him. Just as the rib cage cradles the lungs yet is “flexible” (it expands during inhalation and contracts upon exhalation), women were designed to give men room to breathe – not restricting man’s breaths but promoting healthy breathing. The plan is when God breathes a vision into a man, woman knows when to make room (i.e. not interfere) when it’s time to receive the “breath” and also knows when to draw in close when it’s time to push the “breath” out…

As you can see, women (wives, mothers, sisters,…in different capacities) are instrumental in the development of men. And, men thought they didn’t need us. Ha!…But, just as easily as women can add to men, they can also take away. The same rib cage that provides protection can cause serious damage if its “broken.” It’s for that reason that we need to give our broken pieces to God so He can mend them. Then, we’ll be able to function as the “body” He created us to be. Selah. **G.I.G.**
