Old School Phone

Source.

I remember when I first started dating, guys would call and say, “I just called to hear your voice.” Those words always put a smile on my face. Just the idea that the sound of my voice was something desirable made me feel special, and it also made we want to talk to that individual more often. The same is true with God. Think about it. How do you think God would feel if we told Him, “I just want to hear your voice”? Don’t you think it would make Him want to speak more often? But, much like today’s dating rituals, we tend to just read a quick “text”  (i.e. “Verse of the Day” on the YouVersion app) instead of pursuing His voice.

There have been guys that I’ve interacted with but never spoke to on the phone. They were content with communicating via text the entire time. So, consequently, if they ever heard my voice, they wouldn’t know it was mine. Although “text messages” are a reflection of a person’s nature, there’s something about hearing an individual’s voice…It’s more intimate. And, I want intimacy with God. I don’t want to just read the “text messages.” Don’t get me wrong. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with reading God’s Word, but I want to learn the voice behind the “text.”

Although I’m likening communication with God to the use of a cell phone, unlike modern technology, when God speaks to us, there’s no “caller ID” to let us know it’s Him speaking. We have to pursue Him in order to learn His voice. And, we pursue Him by laying our plans at His feet and asking Him for direction (i.e. including Him in our day-to-day life). Many times God will give me direction on the smallest things. That way when I choose not to listen (because I’m not confident in His voice yet) the repercussions are minor. Also, when that occurs, I’m able to look back and realize it was God speaking, and over time I learn how He speaks to me. He’s so patient with me…Learning His voice is a beautiful thing. **G.I.G.**
