Guard Your Heart

Source.

The heart is where we hold love, and where we harvest hate. A heart that is unscathed has the tendency to be more trusting; it believes that best in people; similar to the heart of a child (and that’s not a bad thing). I believe it is God’s intention for us to have a trusting heart, AND a renewed mind.  A trusting heart that believes the best combined with a renewed mind that thinks in accordance with God’s Word equals a sound decision making system. You see, it’s the mind’s job to guard the heart. We make decisions with our heart, but it’s wise to filter those decisions through our minds to make sure we’re not making choices that will ultimately harm our hearts…Now you see why it’s so important to renew your mind, because what’s the benefit of “filtering” the decisions of your heart through a mind that’s not renewed? I’m not saying if your mind is not renewed you won’t make good decisions; you’re just less likely of make choices that line up with God’s Word/His will.

So, why is it so important to guard your heart? Proverbs 4:23 (NLT) says to “guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” Another translations says out of your heart “flows the issues of life.” Whoa! Did you know that most of the things you go through in life are rooted in, and spring from/flow from your heart? Your heart has a better memory than an elephant! There are scars on your heart that you don’t even know you have, but your heart knows. And, every blow that hits your heart has the potential to change the course of your life (and fear has a lot to do with it)…If you don’t guard your heart and you allow it to be exposed to harm, you risk hardening your heart. A hardened heart is covered in “calluses” (a defense mechanism it resort to after being hit over & over). A callus heart is consumed with fear, insecurities, hate, and rarely trusts…This is not the kind of heart God created us to have. This heart is so scared of getting hurt that it doesn’t have “time” to be concerned w/ the needs of other’s hearts; it’s so busy trying to overprotect it’s own heart.

If you believe your heart is jaded or hardened, first I would suggest that you give your heart to God if you haven’t already done so. Then, pray for restoration and healing of your heart, and spend time in God’s presence on a daily basis. You’ll be amazed how much healing is in His presence…Now, here’s something practical you can do to guard your heart: SAY NO! Say no to people and things that have a history of hurting you. You know what I’ve noticed? After a heart has been abused for a long time, the person begins to subconsciously believe they deserve such treatment & they don’t love themselves enough to say “I deserve better!” Although there are things your heart wants, you’ve got to be strong enough to tell your heart NO in order to protect it. I liken the heart to a child. Children are good in nature, but they need a “guardian” to protect them. Otherwise, they can be led down the wrong path…You’ve got to love yourself enough to tell yourself no.

Lastly, as a Christian, our job is to love. We cannot let anything taint our heart and interfere with our ability to love. Sometimes that means downsizing your friends. It’s okay to love from a distance in order to guard your ability to freely love. **G.I.G.**

“My main goal in life is to love my neighbor, but some people are like porcupines; every time I try to get close to them I get hurt. I’m a pretty strong person, but after a while I get tired of saying “ouch!” Subsequently, I’ve come to realize that sometimes it’s good to love from a distance. It’s the same love just not in close proximity.” ~ Melissa
