Birthdays are for cake. Birthdays are for parties. Birthdays are for being surrounded by friends and loved-ones. It’s a time for celebration, celebration of a new year of life. BUT, I’ve noticed that as most people age birthdays aren’t really much of a “celebration” anymore. They’re more like annoying reminders that you’re not as young as you use to be. Although cake, parties, friends & family and even “annoyance” are affiliated with birthdays, it should be a time when you reflect on your growth over the pass year. You should be able to say that you’re a better version of yourself this year than you were last year. And, if you honestly don’t see where you’ve grown, use your birthday as a time to set goals and make new confessions. Me, personally, I can definitely see where I’ve grown, but I want to grow more in Love this year (I want to be more patient). I want to downsize pride (YES Lord). I want to give more tithes & offering this year than I did last year. I want to step up my prayer life, and grow closer to God. I want to get better at knowing His voice. And, the list goes on.

To be honest, everyone has room for improvement, so why not use your birthday as a time to make plans to become a better you. The way I see it, the more I work on myself, the more suitable I become for my purpose. The more I “prune my branches,” the more “fruit I can bear.” I don’t ever want my immaturity or my insecurities to interfere with God’s ability to use me (and I know it has in the past). Subsequently, I humble myself, examine myself, and ask God to help me grow. I know I’ll never be a finished work, but I don’t want to use that as an excuse to become stagnant in my growth…may I ever be growing upwards.

Here’s a poem that I absolutely LOVE, and I think it’s awesome for reading on birthdays (or any day):

Just think, you’re
here not by chance,
but by God’s choosing
His hand formed you
and made you
the person you are
He compares you
to no one else

you are one of a kind
You lack nothing
that His grace
can’t give you

He has allowed you
to be here at this
time in history
to fulfill His
special purpose
for this generation

P.S. – Today’s my birthday! And, let me add that I believe I get better looking with age. Yes, I age gracefully in the Name of Jesus! I’m speaking it now! Why wait until I’m older to start speaking it?
