Stronghold

If you’re like me, when you hear the word “stronghold,” you think of something bad (it has such a negative connotation). I think of expressions like “tear down strongholds,” or “destroy strongholds.” Well, I’m starting to look at the word “stronghold” differently. First, let me define it and then I’ll tell you why. A stronghold is a strongly fortified defensive structure. In other words, it’s a refuge; a place of safety. That doesn’t sound too bad to me. I guess it depends on what your stronghold is. A stronghold was a place/fortress that people ran to for shelter in time battle. So, a stronghold is basically what you run to in times of trouble. For some, their stronghold may be alcohol (“happy” hour). For others, it may be eating (“comfort” food). Whatever your stronghold is, if it’s not God, it’s unhealthy. After a long, stressful day at work, why not pray? After a heated argument with a loved one, why not spend time in the Word? If you begin to develop a habit of running to God in hard times, He will become your shelter, your walls of defense, your refuge. Unlike those other “strongholds,” God doesn’t have negative side-effects, and His walls of protection won’t lock out good things. Check out these scriptures (NIV):

Psalm 9:9 The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.

Psalm 18:2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn (i.e. strength) of my salvation, my stronghold.

Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalm 37:39 The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord; he is their stronghold in time of trouble.

This week I challenge you to run to God during tough times, instead of to your usual “whereabouts.” You’ll see that He’s a better refuge than anything else you’ve encountered. **G.I.G.**
