Well, I haven’t always been “hair wise.” Maybe “hair remedial,” “hair foolish,” or even “hair clueless,” but definitely not “wise.”  I think wisdom came when I finally decided to stop punishing my hair for being who it was.

On April 24, 2011, I made the decision to transition to natural (Sooo out of character for me. My motto was “If it ain’t straight, it ain’t great!” LoL!). Well, to be completely honest, when I made the decision to go natural, my plan was to still keep it straight. It wasn’t until I started watching YouTube videos and reading natural hair blogs that I started to change my mind. And, the influence that really altered my mentality was the natural hair show I attended in Atlanta. I had never in my life seen so many beautiful natural textures in one place. All of a sudden, I was eager for my hair to grow so I could see what my own texture looked like.

Subsequently, I went on a 6-month flat iron fast, and I started documenting my transition journey on my Facebook page. I’m proud to say that I didn’t cheat on my fast not once. I made it the entire 6-months without touching my flat iron. And, when I finally did straighten my hair, it was longer than it had ever been, because I let it be (no harsh chemicals & no heat)! Originally, I planned to transition for 12 months, but my journey was “cut short,” literally. On December 31, 2011, after 9.5 months of transitioning (last perm 3/15/11), I did an unscripted big chop!

Since my transition journey was complete, I ended my Facebook journal.  But, now that a new chapter has begun, “Hair Wise” picks up where my old journal left off…”Life As A Natural.” This is going to be interesting! **G.I.G.**

Wow Melissa! I am really enjoying your site! Can’t wait to see, more exciting things here! Keep up the good work! Is virgin coconut oil a good scalp treatment?

    • Thanks! I haven’t used coconut oil as a scalp treatment yet, but I’ve heard it’s really good for that.
